Emerging Stronger…It takes more than technology
The recent pandemic has taught us many lessons including but not limited to the need to ensure stronger resiliency and reliability in all our operations. Historically like others in safety we took more of an experienced based risk assessment approach focusing on reducing unsafe conditions and near misses at the bottom of the triangle to prevent the more serious medical treatment and/or lost time injury outcomes at the top. And while we saw significant improvements to TIR and LTIR injury rates, we did not see a corresponding improvement to serious injuries and fatalities (SIF). Recognizing the external trends in SIF also experienced by other companies, we saw the need to redefine safety in our own operations and implement an “accelerated step change” in safety moving to a more controls-based risk assessment approach recognizing that “safety is not the absence of injuries but the presence of defenses & capacity to manage risk”. The accelerated step change strategy was designed as a multi-pronged approach with focus on SIF Prevention, Technology & Innovation, and Culture. To date our accelerated step change strategy has shown significantly positive impacts to our performance, culture, capabilities, and capacity to manage risk resulting in greater resiliency and reliability across our organization. We are not where we want to be yet with regard to safety, but we are making significant progress towards our vision of “zero is possible”.

Panel Discussion
Is your wellbeing strategy set up for success?
75% of those who participated in the CIPD’s 2021 Health and Wellbeing at Work Survey said they believe that senior leaders have employee wellbeing on their agenda, up from 61% last year. The survey discovered that most organisations are taking additional measures to support employee health and wellbeing in response to Covid-19, most commonly through an increased focus on mental health, tailoring support to individuals’ needs, and providing additional support for people working from home. Join this panel as we discuss how employee wellbeing has rocketed up the corporate agenda as the pandemic leaves its mark on people’s mental health. Companies will need to recognise the importance of a wellbeing strategy and how it can raise staff morale and boost retention levels.

Track 1: ESG – The driving force of the future!
Attention to environmental, social, and organizational governance, or ESG, impacts are a critical moment in history as more capital is shifted toward ESG priorities and a new generation of investors (millennials and Gen Z) is having a direct influence on consumer preferences. In a recent study by pwc, seventy-six percent of consumers say they will stop buying from companies that treat the environment, employees, or the community in which they operate poorly. Corporate boards and government leaders are facing rising pressure to demonstrate they are adequately equipped to understand oversee issues, from climate change to human rights to social unrest. The roundtable discussion will explore how to actively shape ESG best practices, and the data visibility needed to move your organization forward.
•How well are you infusing your ESG strategy into your organization’s ecosystem?
•Do you have an effective EHS/ESG management reporting system to meet commitments? What are the roadblocks?
•What kind of relationships does your company have with the people in its ecosystem? Employees, customers, suppliers, partners and communities, employee treatment
•What is on your ESG roadmap for 2022 and what challenges are you trying to solve, and what is the best next step you can take to get there?
Track 2: Make an Impact - Shape your safety culture
Your work culture, whether it be safety culture or psychological culture, reflects your organization’s values, attitudes, perceptions, competencies, and patterns of behavior. Good or bad, it directly impacts your workers. An effective safety culture is critical to ensuring business operations and output continue, and facilities remain incident-free. Overall employee wellbeing, valuing DE&I, and psychological safety, where employees feel safe to be their full selves at work, in addition to voicing opinions, thoughts or ideas in a collaborative atmosphere are equally as important. This roundtable discussion will explore your cultural transformation challenges and how to move your employees forward in a disruptive world.
•How are you ensuring your employees feel safe, secure, and valued at your organization?
•How are you establishing a collaborative environment where employees feel safe to voice opinions or report unsafe situations?
•How are you implementing a positive safety culture in your workplace? What’s working and what’s not?
•How do you incentivize and engage?
•How has the impact of social and workplace change effected health and safety of your workforce?
Track 3: Injury Prevention in the Digital age
According to a 2022 report by AFL-CIO workplace hazards kill and disable approximately 125,000 workers each year, 4,764 from traumatic injuries, and an estimated 120,000 from occupational diseases. Advances in nanotechnology, robotics, data analytics, video, and telecommunications are enabling employers to improve workplace safety in a variety of ways, such as better monitoring of employee health. This roundtable discussion will explore AI and tech tools for workflow optimization, wearable tech, AR/VR training and predictive analytics for incident forecasting and prevention.
•What tech tools are you using (or would like to use) to reduce injuries?
•How are you accessing and managing vehicle equipment and driver behavior/worker safety?
•What is your emergency preparedness and response strategy?
•Do you have visibility into predictive analytics for incident forecasting and prevention?
•How are you scaling the best solutions?
•Techniques/solutions that can reduce injuries/claims & support a healthy & active workforce
•MSD’s: stop them before they start Reducing Lost Time Injury Frequency Rates (LTIFR)
•AI & Tech tools – workflow optimization
•The fully connected worker should not be a fairytale
