"An
Unhappy Community and an Even
Unhappier Rabbi: The Sad Story of
the Last Chief Rabbi from Warsaw"
R. Jacob Gesundheit was the
last chief rabbi of Warsaw. He
was appointed to
the position in
1870 and fired in 1873. While
there were many rabbis in
Warsaw, no rabbi
ever was given the position of
chief rabbi after that date.
Not surprisingly,
the story of his hiring and
firing says a lot about him —
and even more
about Warsaw Jewry and what the
rabbinate meant (and didn't
mean) to them.
