Mission Statement of IJS
The Institute for Judaic Studies of the Pacific Northwest was established in 1982 to meet the growing interest in Judaic Studies both on the college campus and in the community at large.
The Institute for Judaic Studies of the Pacific Northwest is a nonprofit organization that encourages you to join together with people from throughout the community in learning about Jewish history, culture, and life, by:
- Bringing to Portland renowned Jewish Writers and Scholars.
- Organizing conferences on a wide range of Jewish topics.
- Offering specially designed Bet Midrash (House of Study) adult classes.
- Publishing books, videotapes and collections of lectures.
- Providing grants for original research.
- Encouraging enjoyment of the visual, literary and musical arts through sponsoring programs in these fields.
- Exploring relationships between law and religion and medicine and religion through such conferences.
- Organizing day-long learning festivals through marathon study sessions.
- Bringing to Portland the annual Jewish Film Festival.
- Hosting literary salons with local authors.
IJS Funding
The Institute for Judaic Studies of the Pacific Northwest is a non-profit 501C3 organization. It is dependent on gifts and revenue generated from membership and from grants for specific programs from such organizations as the Oregon Council for the Humanities (an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities)
